Journaling Workshop

Didn’t catch our Journaling workshop on Wednesday? Here are some ideas for unconventional journaling methods you can try, PLUS a free printable bookmark!

VIDEO JOURNALS

One fun & quick way to keep a journal is through videos! If you’re like me you already have your phone glued to your hand, and it’s so easy to whip out a little video of what you’re doing. You don’t have to be a computer whiz to put them together into a cute little vlog.

DAY JOURNALING

If you are reading this and thinking, “I don’t have time to breathe let alone keep a detailed journal!”—consider trying day journals! Take 30 seconds during your crazy day and jot down a few things that happened. The funny, the sad, the good, the ugly. For example, I like to keep a list in my phone of the funny things my friends/family say. It’s not complicated, but it makes for some great memories.

TOPIC JOURNALING

Struggle to know what to write about? Try topic journaling. There are lists on lists on lists of themes you can base your entries on. What do you daydream about? What do you miss most about being a kid? What really bothers you? What are you looking for in a spouse (or if you’re married, what do you love about your spouse?) Grab a prompt and get going.

PICTURE JOURNAL

I personally think the easiest and best way to unconventionally journal is picture journals! I feel like pictures capture a moment the way nothing else can. My favorite strategy is using this app called VSCO—I like it because VSCO doesn’t have likes or comments or shares like a regular social media platform, but still allows you to post stuff, with captions, in a chronological format. I am also a HUGE advocate for printing off photos! Keep scrapbooks and when you have time, make notes about what each picture depicts.

ONLINE JOURNAL/BLOG

There are a ton of awesome online electronic journal programs. Another great option is keeping a little blog like this! I’d especially suggest this for life experiences like missions, traveling, study abroad, etc. I think that having the records listed publicly keeps you accountable!

QUESTION/ANSWER JOURNAL

If you are looking to learn more about yourself, this is a great option. Make a list of questions you have—spiritual, personal, intellectual—and then take some time to answer them in your journal. Write about a new question every day!

I have such a testimony of the power of journals– to ease a troubled mind, to bring us closer to our Heavenly Father, and to help us learn more about ourselves!

Now go get writing… and have fun!
